Top six at Thruxton for Caine

Michael Caine scored two top six finishes for Sussex-based Paragon Porsche in the fifth and sixth rounds of the championship as the 2007 Porsche Carrera Cup GB continued at Thruxton over the weekend (5/6 May).

Caine, from Newmarket, is competing for Team Parker Racing and went into the pair of races at the high-speed Hampshire track aiming to at least consolidate third place in the standings.

However, it proved to be a tough weekend for the Michael and the team and they were unable to get the very best from the car. Two top six finishes kept him in the front of the action, but he had slipped to fourth in the points' table by the end of the weekend.  In the opening race, Michael got a brilliant start and was battling for third place at the first corner.

However, he was then badly boxed in as cars jostled for position and suffered further at the chicane at the end of the opening lap. "I just got tangled up everywhere on the first lap," he said after finishing the first lap right down in eighth place.  With a typically determined fight back, Caine soon battled back to sixth and was closing in fast on Sam Hancock and Kelvin Burt at the finish. Without the first lap dramas, fourth place would have been easily in reach.

The second race ran under a safety car for several laps after Burt had a major accident on the first lap. Caine again found his car getting better as the race developed and was challenging James Sutton and Hancock for third place at the flag.

The Thruxton weekend leaves Caine fourth in the points heading into a four-week break in the calendar. The Carrera Cup GB season continues at Croft in North Yorkshire on 2/3 June.
