Paragon takes Group C double at Le Mans

Sussex-based Paragon Porsche scored a magnificent double win at the most famous sports car racing venue in the world when Mark Sumpter won twice in the team's Porsche 962 at the Le Mans circuit in France.

Sumpter was racing his Le Mans-style Porsche 962 Group C in the race series for classic sports cars of the 1980s and won both races over the weekend of 7/8 July. Sumpter was racing on the Bugatti circuit at the track that hosts the legendary 24-hour race each June.

The weekend started well for Paragon when Sumpter took pole position by 1.8 seconds from American racer Brian De Vries. "We weren’t looking forward to this track as we thought it wouldn’t suit our car,’ said Sumpter. "But we have a great set up and our gearing is perfect."

Race one was a 25-minute sprint and Sumpter made excellent use of his pole position and led the first lap comfortably. But on the last corner of the second lap he ran wide and had to defend his position from the hard charging De Vries. "I pushed too hard and ran over the kerbs and gave myself some problems," said Sumpter. "But then I got my head down and opened the gap up."

At the end of the race Sumpter won by 20 seconds from De Vries and third-placed David Mercer.  An hour before race two the rain came and the track was soon very wet. The race started behind the safety car, giving the drivers an extra lap to acclimatise to the slippery track.  Sumpter led from the start and dominated the race as he stretched his lead to thirty seconds by the end of the 45-minute race.

Fredy Kumschick made good progress from fourth on the grid to finish second ahead of Mercer. "I can’t believe how good our car was in those conditions," said Sumpter. "I really enjoyed that race and I’ve had a fantastic weekend."  After winning the last three Group C/GTP races in a row, the Paragon team is now looking forward to the next two races at the Silverstone Classic meeting at the end of July, when Porsche legend, and five times Le Mans winner, Derek Bell will partner Sumpter in the two-driver feature race.
