Paragon takes Group C double win

Sussex-based Paragon Porsche scored two commanding win during the latest pair of races for Group C sports cars during the major historic racing festival at Donington Park over the weekend (15/16 September). Mark Sumpter was the class of the field as he dominated both races in the Paragon Porsche 962C.

However, the weekend didn’t go entirely to plan. "We had a gearbox problem in testing on Thursday and the team worked all through Friday to get the car ready for the weekend," said Sumpter.  "We improved the car during qualifying and I was really pleased with our lap times. That put me second on the grid to the Jaguar of Justin Law and the pace in the series has really moved on since the cars were last at Donington in 2006."

The Jaguar led the field away at the start of the first race, which ran for 40-minutes on Saturday. "I tucked in behind him at the first corner and the Jaguar behind me spun, so that gave us a big gap over the rest of the field. His left-hand exhaust was smoking from the start, so I suspected he had an engine problem."  Despite getting oil on his windscreen from following the Jaguar, Sumpter moved ahead when Law retired to the pits after four laps.

However, Mark could never relax as American racer Brian De Vries was a constant shadow and even nipped briefly ahead as they made their mandatory mid-race pit stop. But Sumpter chased hard and worked ahead of De Vries as they threaded their way through slower cars. At the flag, the Paragon car was two seconds ahead. "It was an exciting race and going round the outside of Brian at Schwantz Curve was very special."

In the 30-minute race on Sunday, Sumpter completed a great weekend by winning with a commanding margin of 17 seconds having led from the first corner despite a flying start by De Vries. "I just managed to get down the inside of him at Redgate, then it was pretty much as planned," said Sumpter after wrapping up a fine weekend in the Le Mans type cars.

The final races in the Group C/GTP season are at the Grand Prix circuit of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on 13/14 October.
