Sumpter and Slater shine at Silverstone

Mark Sumpter and Adrian Slater were among the stars of Silverstone when the Britcar GT season started in late March. Although their Paragon Porsche-entered Porsche 911GT3RSR was ultimately denied a finish, they were on target for a podium finish in challenging conditions.

Qualifying on the International circuit was held in tricky conditions, with a chance that the track would dry during the session. "I went out first and did my three laps on wets," said Sumpter of their initial tyre choice. But he could see that the track was starting to dry out and so the team quickly changed the car to slicks for Slater to head back out.

Reading the situation well, Slater took his time to get heat into the tyres and then went for a qualifying lap at the perfect moment. As he completed the lap, it started to rain again. "We got the timing just right and Adrian did a great job to get pole," said Sumpter.     However, it was another tough call as the start of the two-hour race approached and Sumpter decided to start the race on intermediate tyres. "That proved to be the wrong call. It worked for three laps and then the track started to dry out again," said Sumpter.   Faced with a mandatory 90-second pit stop under Britcar rules, the Paragon team elected to leave Sumpter out on the intermediate tyres for 50 minutes, the minimum stint required of each driver. "We dropped right down to about 12th place, losing time to the cars running on slicks," said Sumpter.

When Slater took over, with the car now running on slicks, the Paragon Porsche was quickly romping up the order and got to fourth place. Then, with third place within reach, an optimistic lunge by Ginetta boss Lawrence Tomlinson at Brooklands pitched the Paragon car into a spin. Frustratingly, the engine would not restart and their race was over.

"In many ways it was a good race for us," said Sumpter. "We were both very happy with the car and the changes we have made to it over the winter, including a new gearbox and more engine power."

The Britcar GT season continues at Rockingham over the weekend of 2/3 May.
