Heartbreak for Caine and Paragon at Oulton Park
Michael Caine came within a lap and a half of scoring his first win in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Oulton Park in Cheshire on Sunday (24 June) in the tenth round of the championship.
Caine, from Newmarket, is racing for Sussex-based Paragon Porsche this season and currently lies fourth in the overall championship standings in his 400bhp Porsche 911GT3 Cup car, which is prepared by Team Parker Racing.
On Saturday, Caine qualified an excellent second fastest to championship leader Steven Kane as the team found its best form to date this season. Into the race, Caine immediately slotted into second place as the leading four cars ran nose-to-tail throughout the 18-lap race. Caine had his strongest race of the season to date and finished just seven-tenths of a second behind Kane. "Steven made a mistake into the hairpin and locked up, but so did I, and I looked in my mirror and James Sutton was locked up as well! Team Parker Racing has done a fantastic job with the car," said Caine.
On Sunday, changing weather conditions left tyre choice in doubt until the last moment, but everyone ultimately went for slicks. Caine got a great start and beat Kane into the first corner to stamp his authority on the race. For lap after lap, Caine drove superbly to fend off his rival, but from early in the race, Michael knew he had a problem under braking. "From lap two it was locking the rears. I wound all the brake bias to the front and it was still locking the rears," explained Caine.
Finally, into Knickerbrook for the penultimate time, the leading car slithered across the grass and spun. "I braked in exactly the same place," said Caine. "There was a big bump in the grass and it was so wet that it turned me round." Utterly dejected at the loss of what would have been his first Carrera Cup win, Caine rejoined in fourth behind Caine, Sutton and Harvey.
Despite being devastated to lose victory in this way, Caine can take consolation in the fact that the team had its best performance of the season and won the 'RAC team of the weekend' award. That form will now be carried forward to the next races at Donington Park over the weekend of 14/15 July.
