Sumpter ready for Le Mans challenge

Mark Sumpter started his preparation for the 2008 motor racing season at Silverstone yesterday (30 April) when he drove the Paragon Porsche-entered Porsche 962 ahead of his campaign in the Group C/GTP Race Series at Brands Hatch.

Sumpter, from Sussex-based Paragon Porsche, was testing his Le Mans-style Porsche 962 Group C in readiness for the seven-race season for the classic sports cars of the late 1980s and early 1990s. His Porsche is one of the most famous cars of its type and was the last Porsche to win a round of the World Sportscar Championship in the Group C era.  "I'm planning to do all the Group C races this season as well as some selected Britcar rounds, including the Silverstone 24 Hours," said Sumpter.

He will race the Porsche 962 in races at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Le Mans (France) and Silverstone and Donington Park in England. For the Britcar races, as well as the challenging Silverstone 24-Hours in September, Sumpter will race a Porsche 911GT3.

However, the highlight of the year will be the Group C/GTP race at Le Mans on 14 June, which is a 45-minute support race before the start of the world-famous 24-hour race.  "The chance to race at Le Mans is fantastic; I'm really looking forward to that race," said Mark. "I've never driven round the full 8-mile circuit before. I won both the races on the shorter Bugatti circuit there last year."

Mark's car was a Le Mans contender in the early 1990s and now he will race the car on one of the most famous tracks in the world, where the Porsche will reach speeds of 200mph. "I'm looking forward to being part of the whole Le Mans weekend. I'm sure I'll be looking down the pitlane wishing I was carrying on for another 24 hours," he said.

Running alongside Mark in another Group C car prepared by the engineers at Paragon Porsche will be Andy Purdie as the Paragon race team becomes established as one of the leading operations in Group C/GTP racing. Both cars will contest a full season, which includes 90-minute races at Spa, Silverstone and Donington. "At the moment, both Andy and I are racing the Group C cars on our own, without a second driver, and the 90-minute races will be quite physically demanding. So I'm going down the gym and working on upper body strength!"

The first race meeting of the season for the Paragon Porsche team will be at Spa-Francorchamps on 17/18 May.
